.COM vs New Domain Extensions

When to insist on .com and when a newer extension can work.

.com remains the default extension in most people's minds. When someone hears a brand, they typically type .com first. That habit gives .com owners a durable advantage in trust and direct traffic.

Newer extensions (.io, .ai, .co and others) can work well for specific audiences — developer tools, AI products, or startups comfortable educating their users. The tradeoff is the risk of losing traffic and trust to the matching .com owned by someone else.

A practical rule: if your audience is mainstream or trust-sensitive, prioritize .com. If your audience is technical and the newer extension reinforces your positioning, it can be a confident choice.
